Cameras watching the streets. Streets staring back. A clip circulating on social media claims protesters have covered cameras across Paris—but the “whole city offline” headline goes further than the evidence. The footage’s date and the scale of the action remain unverified. Raw imagery, big claims. Keep the two separate.
There’s history behind the image, though. During the Yellow Vest protests, anger over fuel taxes spilled into attacks on France’s speed-camera network. In January 2019, the interior minister said nearly 60% had been vandalised, with paint and black tape among the methods reported. That was a nationwide figure for speed cameras—not proof that every CCTV camera in Paris went dark. Different story. Different scale. Context matters.
